Prakrit is an Indo-Aryan language, more specifically, a Middle Indo-Aryan language. The term ‘Prakrit’ is derived from the word ‘prakrit’ meaning nature or origin; thus, the meaning of prakrit can be understood in two ways: a group of languages that were natural, based on the ordinary speech of the common mass, when compared to Sanskrit, the highly sophisticated language of the learned. Students will study Prakrit language and literature, as well as the doctrine and early history of Jainism. Students on graduate courses in Indian Studies may also attend Prakrit classes when these are offered.
